The town got importance during Mughal period. There are many remnants of the period. It is believed that Shah Jahan beloved wife died here and was initially cremated here before her dead body was transferred to Agra. The historic town has seen many battles and wars. It was also important during Maratha rule. The town is hence a lot inspired by Mughal and Maratha rule. After Mughal came the rule of Maratha which was later on taken by the British.
